Covid-19 Vaccination Programme in General Practice – Update

We will be completing vaccination of patients in the OVER 70s age cohort over the next 4-5 weeks in addition to undertaking vaccination of patient in the VERY HIGH RISK group (Cohort 4).

Patients in the VERY HIGH RISK group are those between 18-59 years of age with one of the following medical conditions;

> Diabetes with HbA1c > 58mmol in last 12 months
> Obesity – BMI > 40
> Chronic Respiratory Disease – on home oxygen or hospitalised in the past 12 months

Our participation in the National Covid-19 Vaccination Programme will end when we have completed vaccination of patients in these two cohorts. We will not be undertaking vaccination of patients in the HIGH RISK GROUP (Cohort 7) as we do not have the capacity to provide this service without significant curtailment of normal General Practice services with attendant risk to our patient population. The participation of General Practice in the National Covid-19 Vaccination Programme is optional and it falls on each General Practice to make a decision as to what level of service they can provide.

It is anticipated that an alternative facility will be put in place for vaccination of those people in the HIGH RISK group (Cohort 7) whose General Practitioner is not in a position to provide this service. We await further detail in relation to this facility. This notice will be updated as information becomes available to us.

Covid Booster Vaccine-

In accordance with HSE guidelines, you are eligible for a Covid booster vaccine if you are either:

. Aged 50 or over.

. Aged 12 or over with a condition that puts you at high risk of serious illness from Covid-19.

. Pregnant (from 16 weeks).

. A Healthcare worker.

Please note it must be at least four months since you had your last Covid-19 vaccine or had a Covid infection.

Flu Vaccine

The eligible groups for the 2022/23 HSE Influenza vaccination programme are people who:

. Are 65 years of age and over.

. Are a child aged 2 to 17 years.

. Are pregnant.

. All those aged 6-23 months and 18-64 years at increased risk of influenza-related complications such as:

. Those with chronic illness, e.g chronic heart disease (including acute coronary syndrome), chronic liver disease, chronic neurological disease (where the neurological condition compromises clearance of respiratory secretions), chronic renal failure, chronic respiratory disease (including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis, moderate or severe asthma, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia), diabetes mellitus, or haemoglobinopathies.

. Those with immunosuppression due to disease or treatment, including asplenia or hyposplenism, and all cancer patients.

. Those with any condition that can compromise respiratory function (e.g spinal cord injury, seizure disorder, or other neuromuscular disorders), especially those attending special schools/day centres.

. Children and adults with Down syndrome.

. Children with moderate to severe neurodevelopment disorders such as cerebral palsy and intellectual disability.

. Those with morbid obesity (Body mass index >40).

. Residents of nursing homes, old people’s homes, and other long-stay facilities where rapid spread is likely to follow the introduction of infection.

. Healthcare workers.

. Household contacts of people with underlying chronic health conditions or Down syndrome.

. Out of home care givers for people who have an underlying chronic health condition or have Down syndrome. A carer is someone who provides ongoing significant level of care to a person who is in need of care in the home due to illness or disability or frailty.

.People in regular contact with pigs, poultry or waterfowl.
